Dog Fencing
The Best Fence for Dogs: What Actually Matters
Height, spacing, visibility and digging: the four things that decide whether a fence works for your dog.
The right dog fence starts with the individual dog. Size, jumping habits, visibility preferences and digging behavior help determine the height, spacing, material and gate layout.
Height
Four feet handles many dogs. Athletic jumpers and larger breeds usually want five or six. If your dog has cleared a fence before, tell us. It changes the recommendation.
Spacing and visibility
Small dogs can slip through ornamental pickets, which is why puppy-picket panels exist. Some dogs are calmer when they can see out; others are set off by everything that walks past, and a solid fence helps.
Digging
For dogs that dig, we can plan the bottom edge and surrounding grade as part of the enclosure design.
Gates
Gate placement is where escapes happen. Self-closing hardware and gates positioned away from the main door traffic both help.
Common choices
- Black chain link for an open enclosure with clear yard views
- Solid wood or vinyl privacy for dogs that benefit from visual screening
- Aluminum with a puppy-picket bottom for smaller dogs and an ornamental look
