Wood Fence Installation in Maine

Classic New England appearance with flexible styles and natural character.

Wood Fencing overview

Wood still looks right on most Maine properties. Cedar in particular ages into a soft gray that suits older homes, wooded lots and coastal neighborhoods.

Wood is also the most flexible option we build. Board spacing, height, cap and trim, post tops and gate design can all be adjusted to the property instead of ordered from a catalog.

Wood Fencing installed on a Maine property

Advantages

  • Highly customizable — spacing, height, caps, trim and gates
  • Individual boards can be replaced without redoing a section
  • Cedar naturally resists rot and insects
  • Pressure-treated framing keeps costs reasonable
  • Takes stain or paint if you want a specific color

Things to consider

  • Needs periodic cleaning and staining to keep its original tone
  • Boards can cup or check as they weather
  • Left untreated, wood will gray — some people want that, some don't
  • Ground-contact areas need the right material and hardware

Best applications

  • Traditional and historic New England homes
  • Wooded and rural lots
  • Custom heights, curves and stepped runs
  • Homeowners who like a natural material

Available styles

  • Solid board privacy (stockade or board-on-board)
  • Shadowbox / good-neighbor
  • Horizontal board
  • Classic picket and scalloped picket
  • Post-and-rail, with or without wire mesh
  • Privacy with lattice top

Maintenance

  • Clean and re-stain every few years depending on exposure
  • Keep sprinklers from spraying directly on boards
  • Tighten gate hardware seasonally

Maine weather considerations

  • Frost movement is the main enemy of a wood fence — post depth and backfill matter more than the boards
  • Shaded, damp lots hold moisture longer, so airflow at the bottom of the fence helps
  • Salt air on the coast affects hardware choice as much as it affects wood

Gates

Wood gates are built to the opening with braced frames and heavy-duty hinges. Wide driveway openings can be a double gate or a single wide gate with a drop rod.

Residential uses

Backyard privacy, garden and dooryard picket fencing, pool screening, and property-line runs on wooded lots.

Commercial uses

Dumpster and equipment screening, patio enclosures, and rustic post-and-rail entrances.
