Fences and Property Lines in Maine
What to confirm before installation, and why the old fence isn't proof of anything.
Property line questions cause more fence headaches than any material choice. This is general information, not legal advice — for boundary questions, a licensed land surveyor or attorney is the right call.
The old fence isn't the boundary
An existing fence shows where someone once built a fence. It doesn't establish the legal line.
Pins and surveys
Property pins may be findable and can help. A survey may be appropriate when the line is unclear or when the fence sits close to it. Fence contractors are not licensed land surveyors, and we won't pretend to determine your boundary.
Setbacks and town rules
Some towns have setback or height rules that affect fence placement. Requirements should be verified with your municipality.
Talk to the neighbor
Not required, but it prevents most problems. A short conversation before install day is worth a lot.
