How Vinyl Fencing Handles a Maine Winter

Cold, snow load and plow paths — what to plan for with a vinyl fence.

Vinyl handles Maine winters well when it's installed with winter in mind. Most vinyl problems we see trace back to installation or snow management, not the material.

Frost and post depth

Posts set too shallow will move with the freeze-thaw cycle, and on a vinyl fence a heaved post is immediately visible. Depth is the fix.

Snow load and plows

Plow piles and snowblower discharge put real force on panels. Where the fence borders a driveway, placement matters. Vinyl is more brittle in deep cold, so an impact in January does more than the same hit in July.

Ice and roof runoff

Where snow slides off a roof onto a fence line, we'll talk about placement before we set posts.
